Disaster Recovery Backup, Your Fire Insurance.

The Problem. A day after the Northern California firestorm in 2017 a customer called me: “Scott, our house burnt down to the ground, our computers are gone, can you get us up and running with new computers, and restore our data from Carbonite?” Even though it was the day after having escaped to the coast with my family at first I was dazed by the disaster, I didn’t fully realize myself how people would be effected by this catastrophe....more

SSD File UnRecovery

The way data is written to SSD (Solid State Storage) is different from HDD (Hard Disk Drives). On SSD’s data cannot be overwritten. Flash memory must first be erased before it can be written to. The smallest writable unit on a SSD is called a page which is typically 8 – 16 KB in size. The smallest unit that can be erased is a block which consists of several pages (8 – 16 MB in size)....more

Storing Device Batteries to Prolong Life Expectancy

Maintaining batter life can somewhat be a moving target. Lithium Ion batteries are used in most electronics since 2013. Unfortunately, little has changed with its technology. Storing these batteries does not preserve their life expectancy. Slowly over time the battery loses its life expectancy. Below is a chart on the average loss based on the temperature that the battery is stored in: Storage Temperature Charged to 40% – capacity loss after a year Charged to 100% – capacity loss after a year 0 °C (32 °F) 2% 6% 25 °C (77 °F) 4% 20% 40 °C (104 °F) 15% 35% 60 °C (140 °F) 25% 40% You can improve the life expectancy of the battery by storing it in a cold environment....more

My take on the endurance changes of SSD 3d NAND Technology

A SSD (Solid State Drive) is the storage industries replacement for HDD (Hard Disk Drive) Technology. It is used in newer mobile devices and some desktop devices. SSD tech improves performance significantly by thirty or in some case fifty percent. When SSD technology first came out I did not recommend it due to the endurance of the technology (Life expectancy). The industry didn’t really say much on the difference of endurance between SSD’s and HDD’s....more

Why I replaced Notezilla with Taskpaper

Mobile App Review Solicitations

When I update apps on my mobile devices I am seeing a really terrible trend, developers taking up space in their update notes begging people to review their app. I need to set the record straight before this gets out of control. If your app is worth giving a review, I will go out of my way to do that. But when you ask people for reviews there is a sense of wanting to compel us to leave a review when the innovation isn’t really there in your app....more
