A customer called me the day after the firestorm in the 2017 Northern California fires, “Scott, our house was destroyed in the fire and our computers are gone. Can you get us up and running with new laptops, and restore our data?”
It was the day after returning from the coast with my family. That day I was able to order two new laptops from dell’s online store, install Carbonite, and restore data that the customer was backing up to the cloud. Due to the time it takes to transfer data from the cloud, the customer was up and running in about a week.
Off-site backup protects you from disasters, plain and simple. There are multiple ways you can do it, the two most popular are cloud backup and local storage backup. Local storage backup requires that you rotate between two storage devices. One stored in another location.
When I was in my teens, and just getting into technology, my home was involved in a fire, and I lost everything. I had some backups but they were in the house when it happened. I did think that I would ever need to worry about a loss like that, I was more worried about data corruption.

If the information is private you might want to avoid the cloud, unless the backup software, or cloud backup service offers an encryption solution. Having data stored on a local storage device is good, but what happens if the storage devices are in the location when the disaster strikes? Plan on keeping backups of your most important data on separate media that can be stored at another family/friends house, or even a safety deposit box.
