Customers should watch out for a recent update to Windows 10 called “Creators Update (1709)”. The update is very big, it’s almost like installing a new version of windows. You might experience a performance hit to you device’s ability to perform while this update is downloading or installing. When the update installs it may ask to reboot your computer. There are reports of machines rebooting themselves depending on your device’s update settings. It could spend an hour or more updating you machine. During this time you will be unable to use your device. Walk away and let it finish the update. Don’t get impatient and restart you computer or it will just happen again at a less inconvenient time.

Limited Choices in Delaying Windows 10 Updates

Due to how Windows 10 automates the update process and that there are no real options to cancel an update that requires a restart of your device. Nor is there an option to schedule updates for a more opportune time. This means that updates that don’t require a restart will run in the background without your knowledge and if your system slows to a crawl you wont really know what’s causing it. But for future purposes, you can schedule updates that require a restart to run during a time when you are not using your device. This means that even though a download or install of an update might slow down your device, at least you wont be locked out of your device if Windows 10 restarts to update your device at an inopportune time.

Take Notice You will probably need to leave your device running at all times for this to work. Otherwise Windows 10 will try to update the following day. If your device is off during these times it attempts to update Windows 10 will constantly nag you to update. Since your device is off during the times it wants to update the nagging may evolve into a endless cycle causing interruptions in your work.

Warning Scheduling update restarts will enable the device to wake from sleep, install updates and restart. Please be aware that if you expect your device not to wake from sleep automatically you probably do not want to use this option. I don’t think the Windows update service cares whether your device is plugged in or not. If your device is in sleep mode, unplugged and it has a batter if an when Windows 10 automatically wakes your device it may fail or delay to update if your device runs out of battery power before the amount of time it needs to install the update.

Scheduling Update Restarts

Click on the Start menu, open the Settings app, and select Update & security > Windows Update. As you can see on the screen above there’s already an option to select a restart time to finish installing an update.

Conclusion

Short of disabling the update service entirely (not very good for security) it is recommended that you run this update and let the process finish with out interruption as soon as you can.
